Caucasian Scarlet Poppy Overview
Papaver commutatum is an annual species commonly known by the names Caucasian scarlet poppy and dark-spotted poppy. It produces pinnately divided, lobed, hairy foliage up to 15cm long and bright red flowers which measure around 7cm wide. Flowers have 4 red petals with black spots near the centre, by the base, very similar to the cultivar Papaver commutatum 'Ladybird'. It has an upright growth habit, forming clumps and typically grows to around 40cm tall. It is hardy to -15 degrees Celsius and grows best in full sunlight and well-draining soil. This plant has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
