A spherical cactus is native to the USA and Mexico. Grows up to 1.5m tall bearing large, funnel-shaped orange or yellow flowers in spring and yellow fruit in summer. The spines of this species were used as fish hooks originally. Ferocactus wislizenii var. herrerae has 13 ribs and the spines are not flattened.
