Overview

Viola is a large genus of annuals, perennials, semi-evergreen and deciduous subshrubs, with characteristic heart-shaped leaves and bilaterally-symmetrical 5-petalled flowers. Violet flowers are typically unscented and solitary, with a spurred lower petal, two lateral petals, and two upward-facing upper petals. There are many cultivars in the genus, bred for their multicoloured flowers. They are often known as Garden Pansies, Violas, Violets or Violettas. There is a Viola species suitable for just about every garden situation - from rock gardens to summer bedding to spring-flowering bulbs - and they are popular for year-round container gardening.
