Earth Star Overview

Cryptanthus zonatus is a terresrrial bromeliad from the Bromeliaceae family. This unusual plant is commonly known by the names Earth Star, Zebra Plant and Star Fish Plant. It produces flat, irregularly-shaped rosettes up to about 30cm in diameter. Wide, strap-shaped leaves are produced from a central rosette, they are dark green and wavy-edged with striped silver-white and purple banding. Tubular-white flowers appear on short stems above the foliage, from the centre of each rosette in the summer. Earth Star plants are grown more for the foliage over the flowers. Grow out of direct sunlight, in partial shade and moist, well-draining soil. Originating from Brazil, it will benefit from increased humidity, consider grouping plants together or using a pebble tray to increase humidity.
