Genus of 380 hardy, deciduous and sometimes semi-evergreen tree and shrub species with thorny branches, commonly called hawthorns. They come from temperate climates in Europe, Asia and North America and typically grow 5-15m. Flowers are clustered, 5-petalled and can be double, developing into ornamental red fruits which make them popular garden plants. Foliage may also show good autumn colour and the fruits are sometimes used to make wine and jelly.
