A genus of annuals in the Lamiaceae family native to parts of Asia. They have an upright, bushy habit and often purple or red, serrated, strongly aromatic foliage and spikes of white flowers in late Summer. One species, P. frutescens, is widely cultivated in Asia for its leaves which are eaten as a vegetable, and for its seeds, used as a spice or pressed to extract oil. In the UK they are grown as herbs and as foliage carpet bedding plants.
