Genus with around 287 deciduous or evergreen shrubs, subshrubs and perennials. Commonly grown for their pretty blooms, sometimes aromatic foliage and their growth habit. Flowers are showy and 2-lipped, with the bottom lip larger and more blousy than the reduced upper lip. This genus is popular as ornamental plants, with certain species containing useful essential oils. Smaller species are well suited for a rock gardens and raised beds, while the larger shrubs (like T. fruticans) are best grow in in sheltered borders.
