Paperbark Maple Overview
Acer griseum is a small, spreading, deciduous tree that has tactile, papery, orange-brown bark and striking crimson coloured foliage in autumn. Its leaves are downy and whitish underneath, and its small yellow flowers appear in summer. A popular tree for small gardens, the Paperbark Maple or Chinese Paperbark Maple, as Acer griseum is also known, is happy in most soils and garden locations, as long it's moderately sheltered. It is a low maintenance tree, with pleasing architectural qualities. It can often be seen as a specimen tree in parks and sensory gardens, not least because of its unusual peeling bark. This species has earned a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
