White Clover Overview

Trifolium repens is a European and central Asian native perennial wildflower that has been introduced worldwide as a forage crop. White or Assegaai Clover is a member of the legume family that helps fix Nitrogen in the soil, making it available as plant food for following crops or neighbouring plants and is frequently grown as green manure. It is also grown as a valuable fodder crop for cattle and horses. It, unfortunately, grows too well and is often treated as an weed. Trifolium repens produces varieties which are classed by size of the petiole (stalk that attaches the leaf to the stem). The common name Dutch Clover is used for varieties that have intermediate length stalks, while Ladino Clover refers to those with longer stalks. White clover is used for the species in general.
