The genus Calycanthus contains around 4 species of hardy, deciduous shrubs originating solely from North America. They grow on average 1-4m tall and wide, with bright green foliage and strongly scented flowers spring-autumn. Calycanthus plants are grown for their wide purple-red flowers, which resemble magnolias in appearance, there are also white varieties.

Propagate by layering branches, rooting softwood cuttings in summer.
