Stratiotes Overview

Small genus with a single species of aquatic, hardy, semi-evergreen perennials, also known as water soldiers. These float freely underwater and are favoured for their prickly foliage. Originating from Eurasia, this genus grows best in still or slow-moving water and is commonly used for oxygenating water bodies and may function as a filter, but must be kept in check as they can multiply vigorously. A characteristic feature of this genus is that it rises to the water's surface during flowering periods, producing pretty white, cup-shaped flowers.
