Delta Maidenhair Fern Overview

A delicate, evergreen, rhizomatous, fast-growing fern species with a tufting growth habit. This species typically grows to around 50cm tall, producing smooth black stems bearing attractive triangular foliage which are divided 3 times in a pinnate arrangement. Leaves are attractively rounded and lobed. This plant is a very well know indoor and garden fern in tropical climates. It grows in moist environments, often near streams and is very sensitive to direct sunlight, wind, very cold temperatures and drying out. Needs good, but not direct light if growing indoors and the soil needs to be moist at all times.

Common problems with Delta Maidenhair Fern

How to propagate Delta Maidenhair Fern

Rhizomes

Rhizomes are plant stems that are modified to grow horizontally, typically under the soil surface, however some plants have rhizomes that grow at or above the soil level, such as ferns. They are also known as creeping rootstalks or just rootstalks and they possess the ability to grow roots and shoots to form a new plant, even if the connection to the main plant is severed. Thus whole new plants can grow from small rhizome fragments left in the soil. Many species that possess rhizomes are invasive and this is why they are so hard to eradicate.
