Caralluma Overview
Genus containing around 78 succulent species with clumping growth habits. Foliage is cylindrical with many points, coloured blue-green, turning red and brown under high intensities of light. This genus superficially resembles the related genus Stapelia in both its foliage and flowers, these both lie in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. Flowers are large and showy, foul-scented and covered in fine white hairs. These are coloured green on the outer surface and red-purple on the inner surface. Some species are highly patterned, usually in the form of striping, these star-shaped flowers are fleshy and furry and vary greatly in their shading and patterning across species.
