Genus with around 152 annual, biennial and long tap-rooted perennial species. Some species may have rhizomes. Also commonly known as docks or sorrels. Foliage is generally simple, with waxy edges and leaf shape is variable across species. Some leaves have rounded protrusions called tubercles. Flowers are small and star-shaped, with toothed outer structures around the flowers, these are coloured white-pink and flowers lead onto small triangular-shaped red or brown fruits.
