Urtica Overview

Genus with approximately 53 herbaceous annual or perennial species from the nettle family, Urticaceae. They are colloquially named nettles or stinging nettles. Typically species possess underground rhizomes and are covered in stinging hairs. Foliage is oval to lance-shaped, toothed, veined and arranged oppositely on branching stems. Flowers are discrete and coloured yellow-white or green-white, these are surrounded by larger, long-lasting modified leaves called bracts. Some species are consumed as food, particularly in soups, teas and juices.
