The genus Ephedra consists of around 70 hardy, evergreen shrubs. They originate from dry, rocky environments across the Mediterranean, ranging into China and also North and South America. Foliage is small and scale-like, with green shoots. Flowers are small and discrete, in female plants these lead onto fleshy red berries. This genus is well suited to ground cover for dry sites.
