Also called, golden rod, the genus Solidago contains around 117 hardy perennials with woody bases, which produce feathery sprays of small yellow flowers. These are produced on upward facing, one-sided, branched spikes or unbranched racemes. Foliage is veined, lance to elliptic-shaped and either smooth on the edges or toothed. Care should be taken if planting in borders as this genus tends to crowd out other plants, most species in this genus are considered invasive. These would be best-placed in a wild garden. Hybrids and cultivars have been produced for use in gardens, these have been bred to have more favourable characteristics such as bigger and more colourful flowers and a less invasive growth habit.
