Genus of about 4 annual or perennial grass species native to Asia and Australia, cultivated for food, medical uses and ornamental garden display. Typically they possess rhizomes and some species are prized for their production of solid, bead-like seeds, which are both consumed as food and also used in traditional Chinese medicine.
