A genus of 50 or so deciduous or evergreen shrub or trees species in the Lythraceae family, from Southeastern Asia, Australia and Oceania, often near rivers. They are cultivated for their crinkled, long-lasting and colourful pink flowers held in cone-shaped panicles. Leaves vary widely and some have peeling bark. In cool climates they can be grown outside during the Summer in a sheltered position, but need Winter protection. Often used as specimen plants or as hedges/screens in warmer climes.
