Coneflower Overview
Echinacea is a small genus of approximately 10 hardy perennial herbaceous species, native to East and Central North America. They typically grow in prairie land or open forest habitats and are commonly known as coneflowers. This name is for the shape of their flowerheads, they petals tend to face downwards, creating a characteristic cone shape. The genus Echinacea is named after the Greek word for hedgehog, echinos, due to the prickly appearance of the centre of its flowers. The flowers resemble those of daisies and these plants have been widely grown for use in gardens. Flowers are most commonly pink, white or yellow but cultivation has resulted in a wide range of available colours.
