Contains around 35 species of hardy, annual, biennial or perennial species, including shrubs and dwarf trees, grown chiefly for their ornamental daisy-like flowers. Resembling thistles, the entire plant is covered in spines. Leaves are toothed or lobed with spiked edges and can be hairy. Originally from Europe and Asia, this genus flourishes in poor quality soils.
