Box Overview
This genus of over 70 species of evergreen shrubs and small trees is found across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central America, from woodland to rocky hill habitats. They have oppositely-arranged, simple leaves, which are rounded in shape and have a leathery texture. Clusters of small, pale yellow flowers form in Spring and are followed by pale green to brown fruits. They are grown mainly for their foliage - that can be variegated - and they are commonly used as hedging and for topiary due to their ability to withstand clipping. Dwarf varieties can be used for low hedges, edging, ground cover or in rock gardens. Growing in dry soil in full sun can lead to scorching and dull foliage. Toxic if ingested.
