A genus in the monocot family Commelinaceae, originating in the Americas. Cultivated members of this genus are herbaceous annuals, sometimes perennials, and are commonly known as widow’s tears or false dayflower. They have attractive spotted foliage and lavender flowers, preferring a shady moist position.
