Cape Primrose Overview
Streptocarpus is a genus of annual, perennial and subshrub species from the tropics of Africa. This genus contains approximately 177 species in the Gesneriaceae family. Popular as cultivated houseplants, there are 100’s of varieties and cultivars available. They are commonly grown for their showy, trumpet-shaped, wrinkled and long-lived flowers and attractive foliage. The flowers closely resemble orchid blooms and come in a range of intense colours. Recent reclassification has placed African Violets within this genus, they were previously known as Saintpaulia species. African Violets are a common houseplant plant but they can also be grown outdoors in mild climates, preferring moist shady areas. Some indoor gardeners shy away from growing them because they are intimidated by African Violet care. The plants do have a few quirks, but learning about them and their proper care can be very rewarding.
