Cleome 'Colour Fountain' Overview

Cleome houtteana 'Colour Fountain' is a half-hardy annual cultivar that produces showy clusters of pink, purple, red and white flowers in summer which contrast attractively against the green foliage on hairy spiny stems. Commonly known as Spider Flower or Spider Plant, this species has been classified as Cleome spinosa and Cleome hassleriana and is still occasionally sold under these names. This species is part of the Royal Horticultural Society “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden!

Seed

Sow indoors from Jan to April - Sow into 9cm pots or deep modular trays of pre-watered seed compost. These plants do not like their roots disturbed. Keep at 15-20C (60-68F) and keep moist. Germination should occur within 14 to 28 days. Grow on in cooler conditions, acclimatising plants before planting out after the last frosts. Space them 45cm (18") apart Direct sow outdoors in April or May - in a warm, sunny site with well drained soils. Thin seedlings to 5cm (2") apart and then again until a final spacing as above.
