Genus containing approximately 157 evergreen bamboo species from the grass family Poaceae. The majority of species are located in mountainous regions of the Western Hemisphere and this genus is sometimes termed the South American mountain bamboos. They possess solid stems, a unique characteristic in the grass family as usually grasses tend to be hollow-stemmed.
