Betel Nut Palm Overview

This slender palm has a characteristic trunk ringed with old leaf scars. At the top of the trunk is a crownshaft, with arching, lance-shaped leaves that can grow to 1–2 m in length. Large branching clusters of pale yellow flowers are produced in summer, which are followed by orange-red fruits that contain betel nuts. Throughout Southeast Asia, India and Pakistan, the betel nut is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects.
