Golden Hakonechloa Overview

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is a deciduous grass with a compact, clump-forming habit and narrow, arching, lance-shaped leaves that are striped green and yellow - flushed red in autumn and early winter. Arching flower spikes emerge from the neat grassy tufts in late summer and early autumn and can be used in dry flower arrangements. Also known as Golden Hakonechloa, among other names, this brightly coloured, low-growing ornamental grass is ideal for edging, around the base of ornamental trees and can look good in patio containers. Spreading slowly, it is a low-maintenance, hardy plant that likes humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil and full sun or partial shade. (The sunnier the position, the deeper red the foliage will turn in autumn.) Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' has earned an 'RHS Award of Garden Merit' and is a striking and useful addition in many garden situations. Hakonechloa was originally from Japan.
