Overview

Genus containing around 261 herbaceous plants and shrub species originating from tropical and subtropical areas across Western North America to South America. This genus is widely cultivated for the sweet compounds that can be extracted from the toothed foliage, it is widely utilised as a sugar substitute called stevia. They produce delicate, star-shaped, white flowers.
