Genus with under 50 spiny tree and shrub species in the pea family, Fabaceae (Fabaceae). These are distributed across tropical and subtropical climates in the Americas, Africa, South and Western Asia. Growing well in arid soil, these plants are resistant to drought conditions and are considered invasive in certain locations such as Australia. Here they cause significant economic and environmental damage due to their vigorous, spiny growth, forming dense thickets and dominating space and resources.
