Ruthenian Globe Thistle Overview

Echinops ritro subsp. ruthenicus is a herbaceous perennial plant in the Asteraceae family. It grows to around 1m tall, producing lobed, shiny foliage which resembles that of thistles, coloured green on the top surface and white underneath. Flowers are thistly, spherical and coloured bright blue-purple, borne on long, bare, white coloured stems. This is a good choice for slightly shaded areas, it can add height when placed at the back of border plantings. This plant has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit. It is also part of the RHS “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden!
