Potato Tree 'Glasnevin' Overview
Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' is a semi-evergreen climber that scrambles happily, easily reaching up to 8m in height. Also known by the common names Chilean potato tree and potato tree 'Glasnevin'. It produces open clusters of fragrant purple-blue flowers with yellow stamens in the centre, these are produced in summer and measure around 2.5cm across. Foliage is finely-pointed and oval in shape, leaves measure approximately 5-12cm long. This is retained on the plant in most conditions except bad winters. This cultivar is great for adding some exoticness to a sunny wall. It will need support, but this hardy Chilean potato tree is a prolific flowerer, blooming from mid-summer through to mid-autumn continuously. Best grown in moist, well-draining soil, this plant can handle full sun and is well placed at the back of a border. It has also been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
