Red Campion Overview
Silene dioica is a short-lived, semi-evergreen perennial species from the Caryophyllaceae family. It produces attractive 5-petalled, pink-red flowers up to 2cm wide and it is commonly known by the names Red Campion and Red Catchfly, amongst others. Foliage is downy and flowers are produced from late spring onwards, they have deeply notched petals and lead onto attractive seed capsules. This species is dioecious and thus produces male and female flowers on individual plants.
