Gentian Sage Overview
Salvia patens is a herbaceous perennial species that typically grows to around a metre in height. It produces oval to triangular leaves, these measure approximately 20cm in length. Flowers are showy and 2-lipped, around 5cm in length and these are bright blue in colour. It has a clumping habit and is half hardy, coping with temperatures as low as -5 degrees Celsius, plant in a position of full sun, in moist, well-draining soil for optimal growth. The cultivars Salvia patens 'Oxford Blue' and Salvia patens 'Royal Blue' were once though unique, however they are now considered synonymous with this species. This species has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit. It is also part of the RHS “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen.
