This is a broad conical evergreen conifer. The needles are dark green-blue, the undersides of branches can be strongly marked bluish white. The young growth can be scaled and prickly. The cultivars fall into 4 groups, the Squarrosa Group, the Plumosa Group, the Filifera Group and the Nana Group.
