A genus of grasses native to Eurasia, Africa and some Pacific islands. There are around 17 species in the genus which is in the Andropogoneae (sorghum) tribe in the Poaceae family. Members are evergreen or deciduous tufted, spreading grasses with spikes of silky flowers in late Summer and Autumn. Some species are extensively cultivated as ornamental specimens and there are a wide variety of cultivars and hybrids available. Miscanthus giganteus is also grown to produce biofuel.
