There are 100s of leaf spot diseases, many of which are not a danger to the plant. The main causes of leaf spot disease are fungi but they can also be caused by bacteria, viruses, and environmental damage. Determining which of these is the cause can be very difficult, however, fungal leaf spots can often be distinguished by small black bodies in the spots. Many leaves may have spot or blotch like discolourations due to environmental factors or through past diseases that were halted by the plant's immune response. Leaf spot symptoms should be taken with a pinch of salt towards the end of summer as they may be the result of the plant starting to drop its leaves.

Identification

There are hundreds of leaf spot diseases, many of which are not a danger to the plant. The main causes of leaf spot disease are fungi but they can also be caused by bacteria, viruses, and environmental damage. Determining which of these is the cause can be very difficult, however, fungal leaf spots can often be distinguished by small black bodies in the spots. Leaf spot disease can cause leaf material to die and drop out causing a symptom called shot-hole.

Growth factors

Varies between species but often high humidity and poor air circulation contribute to the spread of the diseases.

Symptoms

Small dark/light spots on leaves.
Irregular blotches on leaves
Regular holes in leaves that are yellowing around the circumference
Sunken black holes on leaves

Biological treatment

There are no biological treatments

Chemical treatment

Though there are some chemical fungicides that can be effective, the diseases often only cause superficial damage and so it is not worth spraying them.

Keeping good general plant health and hygiene around plants to reduce the risk of initial infection.
