National Allotment Week

Published on August 13th 2019
This year's National Allotment Week celebrates the notion of 'shared harvest'. The celebrations take place between the 12th and the 18th of August.
The National Allotment Society's (NSALG) annual event wants to bring attention to all the good things which can come out from an allotment - and not just the abundance of fruit and vegetables on the kitchen table.
The Society encourages people to share their produce with charitable causes as well as opening up their allotment for others to enjoy.
The NSALG brings attention to the case study of Washbrook Allotments in Leicester, who make donations to the nearby South Wigston food bank. The practice began in 2016, following a chance meeting between a committee member and the food bank manager through the National Gardens Scheme. The bank provides bread loaf trays for surplus produce, and these are collected every Sunday from the Society’s trading hut, where donating has become an integral part of allotment life.
Diane Appleyard, Marketing executive at the Society, said:
National Allotments Week is also an opportunity for allotment sites to open their gates and share the wider delights of allotment life with their neighbours in the local community; enlisting their support to protect them for future generations. Allotments support local bio-diversity, offer social contact, healthy exercise, connection with nature, mental well-being, fresh seasonal produce and a wonderful sense of achievement when you take home that first haul of home-grown fruit and veg.
The National Allotment Week will host a series of events this week. You can check them out here.
