Oyster Plant Overview

Mertensia maritima is a low-growing, spreading, deciduous perennial species in the Boraginaceae family. It grows along the ground, termed a prostrate habit. Commonly known by the names Oyster Plant, Oyster Leaf, Sea Lungwort and Sea Bluebells, amongst others. This plant produces fleshy leaves up to 10cm in length, coloured blue-grey to green. Flowers are produced in clusters, they are bell-shaped and bright blue in colour, opening from pink buds, appearing from early summer.
