Alpine Aster Overview
Aster alpinus is an herbacous, spreading, perennial, alpine species which is also known by the common names Alpine Aster, Blue Alpine Daisy and Rock Aster. It typically reaches 30cm tall, producing narrow, short-stalked, dark green foliage and daisy-like, violet-blue flowers that have a yellow centre. Aster alpinus likes a position in full sun and moderately fertile, well-draining soil. It is suitable for many garden situations including the front of borders and larger rock gardens. Several other stunningly coloured cultivars are also available. It has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit and is part of the RHS “Plants for Pollinators” initiative that showcases plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen.
