Maytenus Overview

This genus comprises around 200 shrubs and trees in the Celastraceae (staff vine) family with a cosmopolitan distribution from Central and South America, Southeast Asia, Australasia, islands of the Pacific and Indian oceans and Africa. They are found in a variety of climates from the tropics to subpolar. Two species, M. boaria and M. magellanica, are cultivated in Europe for their cold-tolerance. They have tiny, star-shaped flowers and colourful fruits. Grow in a sheltered position.
