Vitex Overview

Genus with around 223 evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs. Flowers are arranged on vertical inflorescences, they are tubular, 2-lipped and range in colour from white to pale pink to deep purple-blue shades. Foliage is palmately divided into 3-7 leaflets. Species from this genus are cultivated as ornamental plants and others are grown for their wood, which is made into valuable planks for use in construction. Common names include chaste tree.
