Evergreen Sumac Overview

Rhus virens is a semi-evergreen tree or shrub species from the Anacardiaceae family. Originating from Mexico, this species produces characteristic divided foliage arranged oppositely on stems. The leaves display attractive bright orange and red autumn colouration and leaves have toothed edges. White flowers lead onto notable fleshy fruits, which are considered ornamental. This plant is commonly known by the names Evergreen Sumac and Tobacco Sumac, amongst others. Cultivars have been produced and these are well placed in a shrub border, woodland garden or these make good specimen trees which come alive with fiery colours in the autumn.
