Spaghetti Squash Overview

Spaghetti Squash are produced from cultivars of the plant Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo, from the Cucurbitaceae family. Also known as Vegetable Spaghetti, this plant is typically grown for the large fruits, which may be yellow, whitish or orange. When cooked, Spaghetti Squash flesh forms ribbon-like strands, which are compatible to spaghetti pasta. It has a mild, sweet taste. Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo grow well in the ground or in pots, make sure you've got plenty of space as they tend to sprawl wide. Termed monoecious as it produces male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers are borne on thin stems, the female flowers on shorter stems. Identify females flowers by a small round bump under the petals, upon successful pollination, this part develops into the Spaghetti Squash.
