A genus of 11 accepted species of evergreen trees and shrubs, grown for their edible red berries, ornamental red peeling bark, foliage and small urn-shaped flowers. Favoring rocky habitats, they are native to warm temperate locations in the Mediterranean, West Europe, the Canary Islands and North America.
