The genus Coffea contains around 125 species of tree and shrub plants, characterised by their production of bitter seeds (coffee beans) and high caffeine content in both these and their leaves. This plant forms the basis for many coffee drinks and other products including various foods and cosmetics. Originating from tropical Asia and Southern Africa, these commercially important plants are considered one of the world's most valuable and highly traded economic crops. They produce scented 5-petalled, white flowers and fruits after 3-5 years.
