Decaisnea is also known as dead man's fingers or blue bean plant, it contains just 1 deciduous shrub species and produces petalless flowers which develop into distinctive sausage-shaped purple-black seed pods around 10cm long, resembling fingers in appearance. These contain edible pulp and around 40 flat black seeds, which are not edible. It also has broad, pinnately divided foliage and is grown as an ornamental plant for both its fruits and foliage. Fruits in cultivated specimens are usually brighter and bluer than wild species.
