Alocasia Silver Dragon Overview

Alocasia 'Silver Dragon' is a tender, rhizomatous, evergreen perennial cultivar in the Araceae family. Grown for its striking foliage, this unusual cultivar is rare and can be hard to source. Alocasia 'Silver Dragon' leaves are paler green and less strikingly marked in younger plants, compared to mature specimens. Mature plants produce attractive silvery-green stems and foliage, the leaves of which are large, oval, strikingly coloured light green-silver and with deep veins coloured dark green. This tender plant makes a striking visual foliage display and is usually grown indoors as a houseplant in temperate climates, as it isn't hardy. It does best when provided with ample humidity. Placement in a bathroom or kitchen, in bright but indirect light, is advised. Ensure soil is a well-draining mix to prevent waterlogging to the roots. Water less in winter. Mist frequently, year-round. Its compact nature makes Alocasia 'Silver Dragon' a good candidate for a terrarium. It likes to be slightly rootbound so only repot once every 2-3 years, and only increase pot size slightly. Feed monthly with a weak solution of balanced fertilizer. Originally from the jungle floors in Asian countries, Alocasia like a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade, and moist soil that is neutral to acid, where it is warm enough to be grown outside.
