Big Mountain Palm Overview
Hedyscepe canterburyana is the sole species in its genus, part of the Arecaceae family of palms. It is endemic to Lord Howe Island off the coast of Australia where it grows up cliffs in mountain terrain and on exposed ridges overlooking the sea. This palm tree is commonly known as Big Mountain Palm, or Umbrella Palm, is a slow-growing palm with a ringed trunk and stiff, arching divided leaves at the crown. Although it is vulnerable in its native habitat, it is grown as an ornamental tree in warm temperate or cool subtropical regions or as a glasshouse specimen elsewhere.
