Found in marshy habitats in the Americas and Africa, this genus comprises of around 6 species of evergreen or deciduous marginal aquatic plants. They have clumps of tall lance-shaped leaves and long stems carrying panicles of small flowers. In cultivation they require protection from frost. A common name for these plants is alligator flag.
